A GALLERY OF SELECTED WORK BY AKILAH TOWNSEND
Born and raised in the Southside of Chicago, Akilah Townsend taught herself how to handle the camera.
Inspired by the emotional essence of color and how light interferes with its spectrum, her work features warm, saturated hues that softly caress and enhance the subject.
Akilah’s photography highlights her ability to own light and use it to her advantage. The protagonists of her images are individuals part of her community and friendship circle. The proximity to and familiarity of the subjects filter through the relaxed poses and almost candid yet posed snapshots in the proposed body of work.
Her talent in freezing motion on a bidimensional level is remarkable and thoughtful. The viewer is almost invited to fantasize and day-dream about the scene surrounding the image.
Her mastery of chiaroscuro offers a soothing visual experience when surveying her work.
Her roster of collaborators includes The Bail Project.
