INTERWOVEN, A Project by KOTN and Miilkiina
Egyptian talent and the importance of elevating the local scene.

In the globalized world we live in, we sometimes feel we must seek our fortune far away from our original homes. Often, this leads us to sacrifice parts of our lives in order to fit into the standards of whichever industry we operate in. Our autochthonous surroundings do not provide the same opportunities or space for growth and success. This gruesome reality was quickly snatched from before our eyes over the course of the past few months, as many of us were locked away in our small, overpriced city apartments. All of a sudden, the idea of moving “back home” didn’t sound that outrageous. Working remotely became the norm, and Zoom provided us with the opportunity to pop bottles from the comfort of our affordable Ikea couches. There was no need now to spend time stressing over outfits or commuting. Sweatpants will do just fine.

But at Miilkiina, we have been taking local tradition and talent seriously since our inception. Now more than ever, the conversation must be perpetuated. Localized talent is crucial to preserving cultural tradition, the authenticity of a project, and the proliferation of a sustainable method for both a particular economy and its environment. During an era where carbon emissions have become currency, it is vital to reconsider our stance on building in our own city. Not to mention that we are literally legally obligated not to cross borders until science finds a resolution for the mayhem we currently find ourselves in.

We have a dedication to fostering the local scene and ensuring outstanding projects do not get left out of the mix but instead are properly highlighted on an international scale. Last year, we partnered up with quality essentials brand KOTN to work on an editorial campaign to highlight extraordinary Egyptian talent. Regional outsourcing is integral to KOTN’s eco-system as Egypt is the heart of their operations. Their supply chain relies on the centennial expertise of site-specific artisans from start to end. For this reason, KOTN tapped into us to cast and develop a narrative that would give a global platform to some of the most remarkable names in the local creative scene.

Why does the conversation surrounding Egyptian excellence seem to begin and end with the Pharaohs’ golden kingdoms? Egypt is home to incredibly elevated creative projects with international resonance. The minds behind these narratives are determined, unconventional, and innovative. They are proud of their identity and firmly hold onto traditions that are far too often described as decadent and nostalgic. Egypt’s creative scene is alive and thriving. For the KOTN Interwoven campaign, it was imperative for us to enable some of these local creatives and give them a global audience. We tapped one of our contributors, Lara Arbid to write the Interwoven piece.

OKTHEIN

Cairo based design duo Aya and Mounaz Abdelraouf are proof that the power of manifestation is real and that the Universe never misses a shot. Loud supporters of the slow fashion concept, the sisters create long-lasting statement pieces under their label Okthein. Their accessories, reminiscent of the fertile ancient kingdoms, feature gold and silver details over exotic leathers. Their unique approach to design caught the eye of Beyonce’s stylist, who purchased a bag from Curve in Los Angeles, leading to the mega-celebrity posting it on her personal Instagram account.

In the interview we led, Aya revealed, “It was actually during a difficult wholesale season, and I had told Mounaz you know what we need? We need Beyoncé. Between Tuesday and Friday, we listened to her nonstop, and on Friday, she posted the bag on Instagram.” Needless to say, this was a turning point for the brand that finally got its well deserved global spotlight. This drew KOTN in, wholeheartedly.

MIILKIINA

The destination for creative professionals. Our very own founder Nadia is a proud Egyptian American who created Miilkiina with the goal to close the gaps she saw in representation of creative voices on a global scale. With her husband Husam, she took a leap of faith and jumped in the deep, dark waters of creative entrepreneurship to build a space where like-minded creative – or not so creative but curious individuals could find community and a place for their voices. Our intention is to celebrate and foster local and global creatives in everything that we do.
